Determination of the water-soluble total organic carbon

Total Organic Carbon (TOC)

The determination of the water-soluble total organic carbon (TOC) is a valuable method when it comes to the validation of cleaning processes. Here, the focus is not on the question of whether all contaminants have been removed from the component, but rather whether no cleaning agents have remained on the component.By expanding the service portfolio to include chemical TOC determination, significantly faster analysis results and thus shorter processing times can be ensured in the future. In conjunction with GC/MS, ion exchange chromatography and particulate tests, TOC determination is an essential component in determining the surface cleanliness of components, especially after final cleaning.

CleanControlling Medical GmbH & Co. KG, as affiliated company of CleanControlling GmbH (Technical), has now validated this test method and will soon perform this in-house as an accredited laboratory service.

The TOC allows the quantification of water-soluble organic carbons according to ISO 19227:2018 and represents a sum parameter for water-soluble organic residues such as process auxiliaries (especially cleaning agents) and for the water-soluble portion of polymers. DIN EN ISO 10993-18 is also applicable. The result is stated in the test report as a sum parameter of the water-soluble organic carbons in µg/test object or, in the case of water samples, also in µg/ml.
